Cheney Under Fire?

There is renewed interest in Vice-president Cheney's involvement in the CIA leak investigation after notes surfaced that indicate that VP Chief of Staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby's source for the Plame name was Cheney himself. This does not indicate a crime was committed. After all, what is difficult about this case is the burden of proof involving the outing of an undercover operative. The bar is set so high that it is almost impossible to prove it. Essentially, even if the name was leaked maliciously and to hurt Plame's husband Joe Wilson, it will be very hard to prove so. What Libby's notes do is contradict earlier statements that he made to the grand jury and possibly compromise what Cheney said before. That could possibly open the way for perjury and obstruction of justice. Indictments are expected tomorrow by the press, but this being such a tight lipped investigation, no one really knows. With Cheney's name heavily in the mix, the is White House scrambling to put a brave face in the heat of the scandal.
